In response to a request from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) as part of the air permit process for the new clean coal plant, Consumers Energy filed a needs and alternatives analysis with the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) and the MDEQ. The MPSC staff recently issued its report, which is more favorable to the new plant than recent headlines might indicate. While the staff report concluded that the new clean coal plant wouldn’t be needed until 2022 unless existing plants were retired, it did recognize that additional baseload capacity would be needed to serve Consumers Energy’s customers. Consumers Energy has said consistently that the new plant will allow for the eventual retirement of some of its older, less efficient units. Those retirements are part of the Balanced Energy Initiative, which is the company’s comprehensive plan to meet the electricity needs of its 1.8 million customers over the next 20 years.
We need your help. Please contact the governor and other public policymakers. Let them know you believe Michigan needs jobs. Let them know Michigan can create thousands of new jobs with the construction of new clean coal generating plants that will be cleaner and more efficient and affordable than other large-scale generating options.
